Assignment 8

In this assignment you will practice calculating correlations and regressions. These are a little different than what we have done in the previous labs. In this lab we are using continuous variables. Correlations and regressions are some of the most common types of statistical procedures. There are countless variations of the regression based model, but they all attempt to accomplish the same thing: prediction. This assignment will help you get the basics. You should use the two lab example documents and the PowerPoint to help with this assignment.

CORRELATION – Chapter 11

1. A researcher was interested in whether there was a relationship between stress and depression scores obtained from emergency health care providers. The data from 10 emergency workers are below.

Stress M = 31 , SD = 8.25

Depression M = 20, SD = 6.24

  1. By hand, calculate the correlation coefficient. You are given the mean and standard deviation already, so you do not need to do that step. You also do not need to test the statistical significance – simply calculate the value of the correlation coefficient, r. You can use the table provided below to help. I included a few answers to help get you started.

  1. Using SPSS, enter the data and calculate the correlation coefficient and statistical significance. Report the results in APA style. Save this data set because you will be using it for question 3.

Once you have the dataset, please use knowledge gained in other business and/or economics classes to realize what topic and theory the data could relate and a research question that it could allow you to answer. More specifically, please put together an analysis by making sure your project report includes the following 1. Make a decision about the null and research hypothesis by comparing the obtained value to the critical value and interpret the results of the data. You can...

For the two variables of interest: Create a scatter plot with Percent Time Asleep as the independent variable x and Longevity as the dependent variable y. The plot must include an informative title, along with correct labels for both axes. Include a plot of the least-squares equation (see #5 below). Calculate the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination. Identify any data points on the scatter diagram that appear to be influential.
