Answer #1

In terms of transport modes, the primary forms are air, road, rail, and water. Each form has its own cost associated with ‘speed of movement’ which is affected by friction, origin place, and the final destination. Ships are generally used as a favourable option for transporting a large number of goods. For transporting people or goods with maximum comfort and convenience, road and air are commonly used. Railroads are often used to transport goods that are away from water.

Road transportation

It has many advantages especially for companies that rely on fast delivery to attract and retain customers. It is a cost-effective alternative as water transport is notoriously slow while a railway route needs to be constructed if there isn’t one to the desired destination.

Rail transportation

It is arguably the most dependable method of goods transportation. Unlike road and marine transport, rail is hardly impacted by weather conditions. Transport trains will operate in rain, fog, snow, as well as other conditions that might delay shipments carried by other methods. Moreover, the fixed schedules ensure certainty compared to other methods of shipment. It offers huge carrying capacities since additional wagons can always be added to trains if required. The disadvantage is that a delay in transportation might result in a longer time to get the freight delivered by other methods of transportation.

Marine Transportation

Although it is a notoriously slow alternative, it does not matter that much when the product has a long lead time. It is a great option for companies looking to ship bulky items that are not urgent. It is often cheaper than road transport since ships are the main cost incurred. Tolls and other similar charges are not a concern in this form of transportation. The conditions that might result in a delay in road transportation may not affect marine transport. The main disadvantage can be ineffective tracking of the exact location of goods in transit.

Air Transportation

It is extremely useful due to its convenience, speed, and lack of natural barriers. While road transportation might be the quickest way to deliver goods over short distances, air transportation is the fastest option for a longer destination. This is the reason that it is considered the best option for the transport of perishable goods. It doesn’t require infrastructure investment like railways. The lack of barriers ensures that it is accessible to all areas. However, its susceptibility to weather fluctuations proves to be a big disadvantage which might result in long delays.
