Electrical generating plants operate by generating steam at elevated temperatures and pressures then reducing the pressure in a turbine. As the pressure is reduced, high temperature steam expands (and cools) driving the turbine. The shaft work produced by the turbine is transferred to a generator to generate electricity. One limitation on steam turbines is that they cannot tolerate small amounts of water in its liquid state in the gases passing through the turbine. If the liquid content of the steam goes above some small percentage, the liquid droplets damage the turbine blades and lead to failure of the turbine.
Suppose you are operating a steam turbine where the steam leaving the turbine is at 3.99 bar (gauge). This steam contains 95 mass% vapor and 5 mass% liquid. You may assume that heat losses from the turbine are negligible for this problem.

Suppose you are operating a steam turbine where the steam leaving the turbine is at 3.99 bar (gauge). This steam contains 95 mass% vapor and 5 mass% liquid. You may assume that heat losses from the turbine are negligible for this problem. (A) If the shaft work produced by the turbine is 1100 kJ/kg and the high pressure, high temperature steam enters the turbine at 100 bar (abs) what is the temperature of the steam entering the turbine? (B) If...
A steam power plant is based on the Rankine cycle with reheat (refer to the figure below). Steam is produced by the boiler/superheater (H-1) at 100 bar and 600 C at a rate of 2.5 kgs. This is expanded to 10 bar in the turbine T-1 and then reheated to 600 °C in heater H-2. The steam is then expanded in turbine T-2 to a pressure of 0.1 bar. The steam is then condensed in condenser (C-1) which operates at...
In Geothermal-steam power cycle, the source of heat is the hot
water from well. The heat exchanger receive hot water at Tg1= 105
oC and the water leaves at 40 oC as shown in Figure 3. Steam exits
the boiler at 40 bar, 300 oC, and it exits the turbine at 1 bar.
Saturated liquid water exits the condenser at 1 bar. The plant
operate to generate 20 MW electric power with generator efficiency
of 0.95. The isentropic efficiency of...

1) A steam power plant operates on an ideal reheat regenerative Rankine cycle with one reheater and two open feedwater heaters. Steam enters the high pressure turbine at 100 bar and 600°C and leaves the low-pressure turbine at 0.1 bar. Steam is extracted from the turbine at 17 and 3 bar, and it is reheated to 550°C at a pressure of 10 bar. Water leaves both feedwater heaters as a saturated...
01: Steam enters the first turbine at 15.0 MPa and 600°C. The pressure in the condenser is 20.0 kPa. While some steam is extracted from the high-pressure turbine at 5 MPa and sent to the closed feedwater heater, the remaining steam is reheated to 600°C. The extracted steam is condensed as saturated liquid at 5.0 MPa and trapped to the open feedwater heater. Some steam is extracted from the lower-pressure turbine at 1.0 MPa and sent to the open feedwater...
SP-25 Consider a regenerative steam power plant with one open feedwater heater and one closed feedwater heater. Superheated steam enters the turbine with a mass flow rate of 120 kg/s at 16 MPa and 560°C (State 1). Some fraction of the steam is extracted at 40 bar (State 2) and is supplied to the closed feedwater heater. The remaining steam expands to a pressure of 3 bar (State 3), another fraction is extracted at this pressure, and is supplied to...
1. An industrial plant needs 20,000 lbm of saturated steam at 280°F per hour for heating purposes and ten MW of electrical power. A small turbine system is to be designed to handle both of these needs. Steam is supplied to a turbine at 400 psia pressure from a boiler and expanded until 280°F saturated steam is obtained whereupon the steam needed for heating is extracted. The rest of the steam is expanded in a second turbine to a condenser...
HW-33 (25 points) Superheated steam at an absolute pressure of 20 MPa and a temperature of 560°C flows into the turbine of a Rankine cycle. The absolute pressure at the turbines outlet is 0.5 bar, and liquid exits the condenser at an absolute pressure of 0.4 bar and a temperature 75°C. The absolute pressure is increased to 20.1 MPa across the pump. The turbine and pump have isentropic efficiencies of 81% and 85%, respectively. Cooling water enters the condenser at...
Combined cycle power plants are common because of their high efficiency and scalability. They typically combine a gas turbine cycle (the Brayton Cycle) with a steam turbine cycle (the Rankine Cycle) [1]. The goal of this project is to determine the operating efficiency and profitability of a realistic combined cycle power plant. The power plant is as follows: 1. A natural gas-fired Brayton cycle with mÛ air,Br = 1.25 kg s−1 . (a) Ambient air at 1 bar and 300...
P8-29 A closed feedwater heater is used in a Rankine cycle Steam leaves the boiler at 20 MPa, 600°C. Between the high and low-pressure turbines, steam at 1 MPa is extracted and delivered to the closed feedwater heater. Feedwater exits the feedwater heater at 20 MPa and the saturation temperature of the 1-MPa steam; saturated liquid condensate is fed through a steam trap back to the condenser. Steam from the second- stage turbine enters the condenser at 10 kPa, and...
