Answer #1

Ionization energy (I.E.) is the amount of energy required to remove the valence electrons from the gaseous atom.

Ionization energy is inversely related to the size of atom and also depends upon the stability of electronic configuration.

Out of Li and Be , size of Li is slightly larger and it has only one electron extra than noble gas configuration, so Li readily looses one electron to get stable configuration and hence first ionization energy of Li is lowest.

Then comes first ionization energy of Be and second ionization of Be is more than first because after first ionization there is positive charge over Be and this positive charge causes valence electron to be attracted more towards nucleus and thus more energy is required to remove second electron (that is why second ionization energy is more).

Thus correct order of ionization energy from lowest to highest is ;

Option (c) first ionization energy of Li < first ionization energy of Be < second ionization energy of Be .

    Ionization energy (Ei) is the amount of energy required to remove an electron from a neutral gaseous atom or gaseous ion. Electrons are attracted to the positively charged nucleus; therefore removing an electron requires energy. The process is endothermic, and so ionization energies have a positive value. The first ionization energy (Ei1) is the energy associated with the removal of an electron from the neutral gaseous atom. The reaction is represented for the generalized atom X as X→X++e− The amount...
