While researching a drug treatment for depression, German drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) GmbH, claimed to have stumbled upon a libido-enhancing treatment for women. The drug, flibanserin, apparently did not lift women's moods, but during the study for depression, participants taking flibanserin reported higher sexual appetites on measures of well-being. This prompted the company to conduct clinical trials specifically investigating flibanserin's usefulness in treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder (that is, low libido). Bl ran three separate studies, and each study lasted 24 weeks. Altogether, the studies included more than 5,000 female participants in the United States and Europe. The average age of study participants was 35, and most were married or in stable monogamous relationships of an average length of more than 10 years. During the six months of the study, participants received either flibanserin or a placebo. Every day of the study, all participants were asked to record information about their sexually satisfying events as well as rate their desire levels. Changes from baseline (pre-study) were measured and compared.
