ABSTRACT Concrete of M20 grade was crushed at ages 3, 7 and 28 days to serve as a source of aggregate for new concretes, simulating the situation prevailing in precast concrete plants. The properties of the recycled aggregate and of the new concrete made from it, with nearly 100% of aggregate replacement, were tested. Significant differences were observed between the properties of the recycled aggregates of various particle size groups, while the crushing age had almost no effect. Some latent cementing capacity was seen in the recycled aggregates crushed at an early age. Portland cement is the mostly used type of cement for production of concrete. There are different types of binding material is used other than cement such as lime for lime concrete and bitumen for asphalt concrete which is used for road construction. Various types of cements are used for concrete works which have different properties and applications. Some of the types of cement are Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC), rapid hardening cement, Sulphate resistant cement etc. 1.1 Components of concrete The basic ingredients of concrete mix are Cement Sand Aggregate Water 1.1.1 Portland cement The cement and water form a paste that coats the aggregate and sand in the mix. The paste hardens and binds the aggregates and sand together. 1.1.2 Water Water is needed to chemically react with the cement (hydration) and too provide workability with the concrete. The amount of water in the mix in pounds compared with the amount of cement is 1.8 Compressive Strength of Concrete at Various Ages The strength of concrete increases with age. Table shows the strength of concrete at different ages in comparison with the strength at 28 days after casting.
