Alcoa, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is a global leader in
bauxite, alumina, and aluminum production with locations in 10
countries. Alcoa deployed Microsoft 365 to improve communication
and processes as part of the company’s priority to reduce
complexity. Employees at the company’s Iceland facility embraced
Microsoft Teams, using it to access business information from any
location and on their own mobile devices. Alcoa uses Teams and
Microsoft 365 to become more operator-centric with solutions that
enable its employees in Iceland to manage schedules efficiently,
streamline processes, and improve communication.
Alcoa Fjarðaál is an aluminum smelter in a beautiful setting
overlooking a fjord near Reyðarfjörður, Iceland. Built in this
rural location to take advantage of renewable energy resources from
a nearby hydroelectric plant, the facility runs 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Continuous operations in a remote location
increase challenges for Firstline workers.
The Fjarðaál plant formed a committee to find a solution that would
improve communications. “Employees were looking for solutions on
their own to solve their problem. They wanted to build a community
and promote back-and-forth communication to connect plant operators
to the rest of the company and give them a voice,” notes Allison
Koch, Office 365 Collaboration Team Lead for Alcoa. The Alcoa ITAS
(Information Technology and Automation Solutions) team demonstrated
how Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams could address their needs and
serve as an early example for other Alcoa locations, too.
In 2016, Alcoa Corporation became a new, independent company, carrying forward more than 130 years of innovation in the aluminum industry that dates back to the very discovery of aluminum in 1886.The proof of concept was a success and quickly turned into a full solution including Teams capabilities such as chat, voice, meetings, file sharing, and Shifts, which employees could easily access on their personal mobile devices. “Before Microsoft 365, we couldn’t access any of our resources outside the Alcoa network without VPN or a managed device,” explains Koch. “Now with Microsoft 365, people can access the tools anywhere, on any device, and that was really a game-changer for us.”A significant challenge for the Fjarðaál staff was scheduling, ensuring workers would be there to keep the plant running without interruption. The plant had a large magnetic board that displayed two months of shifts, with magnets representing the person scheduled or requests for certain shifts.
Alcoa is using the successful adoption of Teams at Fjarðaál to demonstrate its potential to other plants. “Someone may have a problem in Fjarðaál that someone else in Brazil has resolved. Now we can provide those connections for people, so they can have conversations that weren’t always possible before,” explains Koch. “The ability to translate languages in Teams is also certainly a game-changer for us as a global company, because language is often a barrier in people making those connections and having conversations. Now they can chat in their native languages and break down those barriers.”
