PRELAB EXERCISE EXPERIMENT 21
Synthesis of Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic Acid)
What is the purpose of sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid used in the acetylation reaction? Use equations to explain this purpose.
The procedure calls for cautious addition of water to the reaction mixture while it is still hot. What purpose does the addition of water serve and why should the addition be done while the reaction mixture is hot? Provide an equation for the reaction involved.
Using the quantities of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride noted in the macroscale procedure and any other necessary data, calculate the theoretical yield in moles and grams of aspirin.
Describe how and why the ferric chloride test can be used to detect whether your reaction has gone to completion.

Organic Chemistry Laboratory Work
Preparation of Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASPIRIN)
We used Sulfuric Acid for Quesiton 1.
1: What purpose does the acid in this experiment serve? 2: Why did you add water once the formation of aspirin is complete? 3: Why did you recrystallize the product from warm water?
1) Which reactant, salicylic acid or acetic anhydride, is in
excess? Show your work.
2) If you were to use 3.17 g of starting material, how much
product would you expect? Again, show your work.
3) Why is phosphoric acid added to the reaction?
4) A small amount of water is added at the end of the reaction
to react with the excess acetic anhydride. Show a balanced equation
for that reaction.
5) Explain the purpose of the FeCl3 test...

EXPERIMENT 19 PREPARATION OF ASPIRIN In addition to the Fischer esterification method presented in Experiment 18, a second method for preparation of esters involves the reaction of anhydrides with the hydroxyl This method is ospecialy usoful for tho preparation of acetate esters, since acetic anhydride is an inexpensive and reactive reagent. In this experiment the hydroxyl group of salicylic acid is acetic anhydride to make acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin. The short...
H3PO4 OH + OH OH salicylic acid acetic anhydride acetic acid acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) 1. Why is it better to perform acetylation with acetic anhydride rather than using a Fischer esterification with acetic acid? 2. Draw a complete arrow-pushing mechanism for the reaction. 3. When an old sample of aspirin is left in moist conditions, it will begin to smell like vinegar. Draw a reaction scheme and briefly explain what happened.

Mustrates treat all types of ilnesses. Background Aspirin is a prodrug of salicylic acid, the actual active drug. A compound related to salicylic acid, salicin, was first isolated from willow bark in the mid 1700's, but willow-bark extract was used by the andient Greeks as a treatment for pain and fever. Salicylic acid (and many related phenols) are very hard on your Ho stomach, but when esterified, as aspirin is, they are much better tolerated. Simple esters are...
Synthesis of Aspirin Lab Quesitons 1. what major change in the IR spectrum would be expected upon conversion of salicylic acid to acetyl salicylic acid? 2. what purpose did the sulfuric acid serve in this reaction? what would happen if you used phosphoric acid, H3PO4 instead? 3. pick a prescription drug that you or your friends use. describe how it was synthesized
1. For the acetylation of ferrocene, ferrocene is mixed with acetic anhydride and 85% phosphoric acid and heated for 20 mins. Why is phosphoric acid used rather than a stronger acid such as sulfuric acid? 2. For the oxidation of ferrocene, NH4[PF6] is added to the reaction mixture of ferrocene, acetone, distilled water, and anhydrous FeCl3. What is the purpose of adding NH4[PF6]?

Preparation of salicylic acid: Place 2g of salicylic acid into dry conical flask. Add 5 mL acetic anhydride and 5 drops of 85% phosphoric acid. Swirl the mixture and heat on a steam bath for 5 minutes. Remove flask form the steam bath and whilst still hot add 2 mL of water in one portion to decompose excess acetic anhydride. Why add the reaction mixture while it is still hot? Preparation of salicylic acid: Place 2g of salicylic acid into...
