What are the stages of relational escalation and de-escalation. What are the traits associated with each?
In your opinion are these one-way or bi-directional?
Relational escalation: initiating (instigating communication), experimenting (uncovering unknown/reducing uncertainty), intensifying (integrating identities), integrating (further fusion through interdependence), and bonding (stabilizing and gaining support)
De-escalation: differentiating (regaining individual identity), circumscribing (deteriorates communication), stagnating (partners no longer share themselves with each other), avoiding (avoids physical connection/ no more communication), and terminating (end of relationship).
All of these stages are those within a relationship and therefore bi-directional. It takes both partners to either connect or disconnect. Although some of these can be one-sided, the actions still initiate some form of response from the other.
