What are the three groups for the month that conversion equivalent units are calculated for and applied to and why do we have to use equivalent units?
The conversion equivalent units are calculated for following 3 groups
· Opening work in process (unfinished work in last month is completed current month)
· Units started and completed during the current month ( fully complete)
· Closing work in process (finished work in current month)
The work in process is never 100% complete in a process costing. Hence the closing sock should be expressed in terms of equivalent units to calculate cost per equivalent unit. The cost per equivalent unit helps in calculating cost of goods completed and transferred and valuing closing work in process during a particular given period.
