Granites, incase of unwheathered condition have less than one percentage of porosity and hence cannot hold water. On exposure to natural weathering these rocks are broken and fractured providing interconnected fissures which allows percolation of surface water. this percolation brings further disintegration and chemical decomposition by which rock material becomes coarse granular, and is able to contain considerable quantities of ground water. Depending on th areal extent and depth of weathering these layers constitute potential aquifers in regions of crystalline granite and gnesissic rocks. Underlying this weathered layer, there lies a semi- weathered layer which while retaining the original crystalline structure of granite,is highly fractured with feldspar in an advanced stage of decay. The semi weathered layer is sometimes totally absent or in certain cases consists of considerable amount of water if it is present.
