Advantage of a three phase drum switch has over combination with reversing motor starter:

Drum switch: It is a physical switch which is operating in manual mode. The operator can actually change the place of handle of the switch which is from forward direction to reverse direction or into the off position.

The contacts of a drum switch array when it is connected in reverse, forward and off position are as follows:

For Reverse position: Connected terminal are 1 &2, 3&4 and 5&6.

For Forward position: Connected terminal are 1&3, 2&4 and 5&6.

For Off position: All the terminals are kept open.

Figure shows the 3-phase AC motor is associated to 3-phase supply through a drum switch.

It is realized that when using the drum switch, in which any of the two supply lines are associated to the motor and it can be swapped means the motor has to alter the direction of rotation of the motion.
