Question

epidemiology

According to a census data (1970), 4,648,377 persons lived in a rural town in West Malaysia. During the same year, census data showed that 3,409,169 persons were residing in Washington State, U.S.A., a predominantly industrialized society. Mortality data indicated the age-specific death rates for Malays in West Malaysia exceeded those for residents of Washington State for every age group by substantial margin. Yet the overall crude death rate for Washingtonians exceeded that for Malays (8.8 per 1,000 vs. 7.6 per 1,000).

From the data in the table above, perform calculations and answer the following questions:

   (a) Calculate the age-adjusted death rate for Malays, using the population of Washington State as the standard population.

Santa Elena is a seacoast community with a population of 99,000. Its residents can be divided into three age groups: 25-44, 45-64, and 65+, each comprising one third of the population. In 1990, 100 cases of hepatitis A occurred in Santa Elena and were traced to the consumption of contaminated oysters. Of these 100 cases, 20 between the ages of 25 and 44, 10 between the ages of 45 and 64, and 5 over the age of 64 ultimately proved...

Calculating Mean, Median, and Mode (Individual Data) Individual data – represents individual values in a set. Mean – is the average value of the values in a set. It is calculated by dividing the sum of the individual values in a set by the number of values in that set. Median – better represents a measure of central than the mean in a set of data that are skewed one direction or another. To calculate the median value of individual...

Lung Cancer & Smoking Case Study A causal relationship between cigarette smoking and lung cancer was first suspected in the 1920s on the basis of clinical observations. To test this apparent association, numerous epidemiologic studies were undertaken between 1930 and 1960. Two studies were conducted by Richard Doll and Austin Bradford Hill in Great Britain The first was a case-control study begun in 1947 comparing the smoking habits of lung cancer patients with the smoking habits of other patients. The...

Why Malaysians need a well-comprehensive social safety nets program? Achieving high growth while ignoring the welfare of the lower income group is an unwarranted act. Like the rest of the world, Malaysia suffers from the increasing gap between the rich and the poor despite the low incidence of absolute poverty today compared to in 1970s. Urban poverty is rising too together with the relative poverty due to income inequalities within and among the ethnic groups and the different social sectors....
