Regression testing is by definition the re-execution of previously successful tests. This sounds like a waste of time to run tests that have already passed. Explain why this might be useful.
Regressions testing is useful in such cases like if you want to retest a piece of software or something that is being modified or undergoes some changes like addition or deletion of a module etc.
as you said it is retesting of the thing which is already passed but if any changes occurs in the softwares after testing then there will be a need to retest it again through the regression testing because the changes might affect the other portions of the software.
therefore the regression testing process is used to ensure that the change in one part of the software must not affect the whole thing.
Regression testing is used to test the portions which has undergone some changes to check whether the changes are working properly or not.
