External sorting is used when we are dealing with huge amounts of data which cannot be stored in the memory.So we use some external memory devices like CD's, hard drive etc.

In this process we divide the data into chunks which our RAM can deal and sorts them using hybrid merging process. So Quick and Merge sort are best algorithms for this.
