what do you know about traveling waves, with an example ? ( Physics 212)
Transverse Waves
For transverse waves the displacement of
the medium is perpendicular to the
direction of propagation of the wave. A
ripple on a pond and a wave on a string
are easily visualized transverse waves.
Transverse waves cannot propagate in a
gas or a liquid because there is no
mechanism for driving motion
perpendicular to the propagation of the
wave.
Longitudinal Waves
In longitudinal waves the displacement of
the medium is parallel to the propagation
of the wave. A wave in a "slinky" is a
good visualization. Sound waves in air are
longitudinal waves......
.
transverse waves.:- sesmic waves
longitudinal waves :- sound waves
it is accompanied with the transfer of energy, it may be possible that the medium in which it travels may get displaced by a small amount. usually there are two types of waves based on oscillation of medium particles
1. transverse waves - in which the medium particles oscillate perpendicular to the wave propagation. eg- waves on string
2. longitudinal waves- in which oscillations are parallel to the wave propagation, eg- sound waves
the two
the two main form of waves are:
1 mechanical- these waves propagate through a medium, and the substance of this medium is deformed. The deformation reverses itself owing to restoring forces resulting from its deformation. For example, sound waves
2. Electromagnetic waves - they do not require a medium to travel and hence they can travel trough vaccum. eg- radiowaves, microwaves, light from the sun
wave equation describes the motion of waves, it also sets out how the disturbance proceeds over time. The mathematical form of this equation varies depending on the type of wave.
One can very well relate the wave motion with persons standing in queue. if a person standing at last falls then step by step the next person falls and then the one standing in front of him and so on. thus disturbance in form of energy is transferred from last to front.
the various characteristics of waves are :
1. wave velocity
2. particle velocity
3. wavelength
4. amplitude
5. phase velocity

What do you think about the "King Andrew" cartoon? Considering what you know about Jackson, do you think it is accurate? Why or why not? Who do you think created it - a Democrat or a Whig?
If you do a quick online search about the dangers of exposure to electromagnetic waves, you will find many alarming articles. This is a heavily debated topic that is intertwined with our use of modern technology. For this discussion topic address the following: What are common sources of electromagnetic waves that we are constantly exposed to? What are some of the health concerns people have regarding exposure to electromagnetic waves (or fields)? Do you think these concerns are warranted? Provide...
Sound waves are a longitudinal wave that have a speed of about 340 m/s when traveling through room temperature air. What is the wavelength of a sound wave that has a frequency of 9,462 Hz?
Are you concerned about the health risks of working in the hospital? What do you know about MRSA?
You will also need to know about UV sensitivity. For example, explain what is going on with the plates pictured below? The organism was S. mar so it is pink when it grows at room temp fyi.
How do the principles of transverse traveling waves and standing wave patters, relate to the tuning and string thickness of a string instrument such as a guitar?
as an example, a large company that you know about that would have many units of operations. How do you think the leadership of that company monitors routine activity and reacts to unexpected events? How would you organize the business?
