Shown below a possible mechanism for the reaction of aspirin an acid with sodium hydroxide a base. First step is base picks up the acidic hydrogen off of carboxylic acid to form carboxylate anion. The anion intramoleculary attacks on the acetyl carbonyl carbon which cleaves to form an anhydride type of intermediate. Final step of hydrolytic workup yields the salicylate as the product of the reaction.
