A cell phone's battery life is important when making a purchase. The Samsung Galaxy is said to have a mean battery life of 8 hours. In a random sample of size 14, the mean battery life was 8.22 hours. Population standard deviation is known to be 1 hour. Conduct a test where Ho: mu = 8 against Ha: mu ≠ 8.

a) Calculate the appropriate test statistic.

b) Determine the p-value and include a labeled picture.

c) At significance of 0.05, state your conclusion in terms of the problem.

Answer #1

\\ H_0:\mu=8\\\\ H_1:\mu \neq8\\\\ a.)Test~Statistic(Z)=\frac{\bar{x}-\mu}{\sigma/\sqrt{n}}=\frac{8.22-8}{1/\sqrt{14}}=0.82\\\\ b.)p-value=p(|Z|>0.82)\\\\ ~~~~~~~~~=0.4122\\\\

c.)

P-value is less than significance(alpha=0.05), fail to reject Null Hypothesis.

There is not enough to support the claim that true mean is different than 8.

Astronomers have recently discovered an unknown distant galaxy and noticed something abnormal. Specifically, they suspect the percentage of stars that host planets in this galaxy is lower than is typical. (It is known that around 75% of stars throughout the universe have planets). Given the current state of technology, astronomers are not able to conduct a complete scan of all the stars in this galaxy. So instead they randomly observed 45 stars within the new galaxy, and found only 24...

A phone manufacturer wants to compete in the touch screen phone market. Management understands that the leading product has a less than desirable battery life. They aim to compete with a new touch screen phone that is guaranteed to have a battery life more than two hours longer than the leading product. A recent sample of 120 units of the leading product provides a mean battery life of 5 hours and 40 minutes with a standard deviation of 30 minutes. A...

Many smartphones, especially those of the LTE-enabled persuasion, have been criticized for exceptionally poor battery life. Battery life between charges for the Motorola Droid Razr Max averages 20 hours when the primary use is talk time and 7 hours when the primary use is Internet applications (The Wall Street Journal, March 7, 2012). Since the mean hours for talk time usage is greater than the mean hours for Internet usage, the question was raised as to whether the variance in...
