Hornblende is the group of amphibole minerals that are associated with the metamorphic or igneous rocks and since they are a group of minerals with variation in the type of element that is present in them but the basic formula of hornblende is as follows:

(Ca,Na)2-3(Mg,Fe,Al)5(Si,Al)8O22(OH,F)2

The test for knowing hornblende minerals are:

  • They are always dark in colour and most of the time they are black in color.
  • Their two direction of cleavage plane intersect at 560 and 1240.
  • The streak of the mineral is white to colourless.
  • It have a vitreous lustre.
  • At Mohr's hardenss scale, the hardness of different minerals varies from 5 to 6.
  • Specific gravity varies from 2.9 to 3.5.
  • The crustal system of different minerals is monoclinic.
