considering the structure of ferrocene and acetylferrocene, identify what interparticle/intermolecular forces are present between these ferrocenes and the immobile phase. How do these IPF/IMF's help explain the ORDER in which the ferrocenes come off the alumina column?

Answer #1

1) acetylferrocene contains polar (C=O) group .hence, there exist dipole dipole interaction between acetyl ferrocene and polar Alumina column.

on the other hand, weak vanderwall forces exist between ferrocene and Alumina column.

stationary phase in case of Alumina column is Polar.

2) as both, acetyl ferrocene and Alumina (stationary phase) is Polar, so strong intermolecular interaction takes place between them. so acetyl ferrocene is strongly absorbed on the surface of column. while, due to weak interaction of ferrocene it comes out first.

So, the correct order of coming from the column is;

first ferrocene will come followed by acetylferrocene.
