The Curve Fit tool (Logger Pro software) was used to obtain the slope, m, of the straight line. The result was displayed in the following format: m=(0.4359±0.008434)m/s^2. Which of the following is correct, according to significant digits?

Select one:

m=(0.44±0.01)m/s^2

m=(0.436±0.008)m/s^2

m=(0.435900±0.008434)m/s^2

m=(0.4359±0.008)m/s^2

m=(0.4359±0.0084)m/s^2

Answer #1

m=(0.4359±0.0084)m/s^2 is the right answer

The reason is that the average value and the uncertainity should have same number of digits after decimal places.

Also we try to limit the number of significant figures in uncertainity to 1 or 2.

And the average value in m=(0.4359±0.0084)m/s^2 is same to the average value in the result which was displayed. i.e equal to 0.4539.

So because of these reasons the best possible answer is m=(0.4359±0.0084)m/s^2.
