Control of Breathing Activity You Can Do at Home!! Purpose: to observe the role of carbon dioxide in the blood on respiratory activity 1. Have your partner (roomate or family member) count your breathing rate for 2 minutes as you sit quietly. Record your results as number of breaths per minute in the space below. Note whether the breathing is shallow or deep. Breaths/min depth 2. Take a deep breath and time how long you can reasonably hold your breath. Time 3. Hyperventilate by breathing deeply and rapidly for 20 seconds (or less if your feel uncom- fortable, dizzy or faint). When completed, immediately pinch your nose shut and record how long you can reasonably hold your breath. Time
