Chief cell (zymogenic cells): Secretes pepsinogen and other enzymes of gastric juice. Pepsinogen is activated into pepsin in the acidic pH. Pepsin is a proteolytic enzyme released by chief cells present in the stomach. Pepsin breakdown the peptide bond and converts proteins into amino acids.

It is important to release the peptidases as the zymogens (inactive enzymes). This is beneficial to

  • Avoid the breakdown of the other peptide proteins of the cell
  • To regulate the time and site of protein activity
