Paul & Elder (2012) states that each of us engages in unethical behavior, but few recognize they do. It is important to understand what unethical behavior is, so we do not engage in such actions. Behaving ethically means that you are doing the right thing. However, people do not always know what is ethically justified (Paul & Elder, 2012). Human behavior can increase or decrease the quality of life (Paul & Elder, 2012). Some examples of unethical behavior include money paid for bribes, unreported income, and shoplifting (Aval, Gino, Barkan, & Ariely, 2011). Aval et al., (2011) states that using a three principle framework can help with moral behavior. The three principles include reminding the individual of what is ethical behavior, showing them what ethical behavior is and then engaging them in an activity that demonstrates ethical behavior (Aval et al., 2011). Tackling issues instead of ignoring them usually result in a positive outcome.
Human rights are outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but not everyone lives by them (Paul & Elder, 2012). As outlined in the declaration, a human right is a legal right that every human being has regardless of race, gender, religion, or location (Paul & Elder, 2012). An example of a violation of a human right is police brutality because of the race or gender of an individual. One way to deal with the human rights challenge is to build empowerment, increase dialogue, and implement constructive engagement (Mena, de Leede, Baumann, Black, Lindeman, & Mcshane, 2010). Increasing the conversation around an issue is bound to produce positive results.
The author of this discussion post believes that engaging in conversation and action around ethics and human rights will improve the uncertainties around these issues. As we open up about personal experiences and shed light on the problems with ethics and human rights, the more we understand what causes people to behave in such a way. Understanding the causes of this unacceptable behavior will give us a better idea on how to resolve the issues. One can only hope for a world that behaves ethically, and the violation of human rights does not exist.
