A soil analysis was done for the exchangeable cations in the soil and the results were as follows:
Ca = 7 cmol/kg
Mg = 4 cmol/kg
K = 585 mg/kg (atomic wt. Potassium is 39 g/mol)
Na = 1 cmol/kg
Al= 135 mg/kg (atomic wt. Aluminum is 27 g/mol)
H= 3 cmol/kg
Calculate the CEC of this soil –do not forget the units and please show example calculations
First we would convert the units to meq /100 gm
Ca = 7 cmol/kg = 7 meq /100 gm
Mg = 4 cmol/kg=4 meq /100 gm
K = 585 mg/kg = (585 / 390) cmol/kg = 1.5 cmol/kg =1.5 meq /100 gm
Na = 1 cmol/kg=1 meq /100 gm
Al= 135 mg/kg = (135 / 270) cmol/kg = 0.5 cmol/kg =0.5 meq /100 gm
H= 3 cmol/kg=3 meq /100 gm
Hence, CEC of the soil is = (7 + 4 + 1.5 + 1 + 0.5 + 3) meq /100 gm = 17 meq /100 gm

Please Answer: CALCULATION QUESTION 1 (A) Calculate the number of cmol of Al3+ cations needed to replace 10 cmolc of Ca2+ by cation exchange in a soil. (B) How many grams of Al3+ does this correspond to? (you’ll need the atomic weight of Al, which is 27 g/mol, to calculate this) CALCULATION QUESTION 2 A soil sample (500 g) contains the following amounts of exchangeable cations: Ca2+= 9 cmolc , Mg2+= 3 cmolc , K+= 1 cmolc , Al3+= 3...
I keep getting these wrong. Can you please show me how they are worked out? Thank you so much! 10. A soil analysis was performed to determine the cation exchange capacity based on exchangeable Na, K, Al, and Mg, and the results were: 4 cmol Na/kg 4 cmol K/kg 3 cmol Al/kg 2cmol Mg/kg Calculate the Cation Exchange Capacity. 11. A similar analysis was performed for the following cations. However, this time the results were reported as mg of the cation per kg...

Then NH4 was displaced by K* and NH4 was determined to be 60 mg in solution. Calculate the CEC (cmolokg) of the soil. The cations on an exchangeable sites of a 30 g soil were displaced by repeatedly washing by a salt and found to be...
Exactly 1.5g of soil is saturated with 100 mL of 1 M KCl. At the end of the saturation, the solution is analyzed, and the following results obtained: Ca = 0.50 mg/L; Mg = 1 mg/L; Na = 1.5mg/L; Al = 2 mg/L. If this represent all of the exchangeable ions that were initially on the soil, what is the CEC and Base Saturation in men/100g?
a) Suppose that 1 g of dry soil is mixed vigorously with 100 mL of 0.5 M ammonium acetate solution. The soil and water mixture is filtered to remove the soil. The concentrations of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and hydrogen ions in the filtrate are measured. The concentrations of the cations found in the extraction solution are as follows: Ca2+-25.8 μg/mL, Mg2 3.4 ug/mL, K -2.2 ug/mL. Calculate the CEC of the soil. This is the same problem from Discussion 2....
A mixture of benzene, Napthalene, trichloroethylene and chlorobenzene were found in a groundwater plume. Consider the partitioning of these four compounds in a contaminated soil. Assume that the hydrocarbon mixture has contaminated the soil at an average of 0.09 liters of the mixture per cubic meter of soil. Considering the soil above and below the water table (ie. each cubic meter is 60% saturated with water by volume). The soil contains 0.75% organic carbon and has a porosity of 30%...

Michael, a 54-year-old male, was admitted to the emergency department (ED). He was conscious but his level of consciousness (LOC) was diminished. He was neither very alert nor coherent in responding to verbal questioning. Michael was responsive to pain stimulus. He did not have “alcohol breath” or a “fruity odor” upon exhalation. Michael admitted that his vision was slightly blurred and that he was seeing double (diplopia). Slight nystagmus was evident. Michael experienced multiple episodes of emesis.
