For the same conversion, it depends on the order of the reaction:

For positive order reactions: PFR will always give a shorter residence time compared to CSTR

For negative order reactions: CSTR will always give a shorter residence time compared to PFR

For zero order reactions: the residence time doesn't affect the conversions.

In simple words, if the order is positive, then rate of reaction depends upon the concentration directly, so higher the concentration of the reactant in the system it will be better. Similarly, if the order is negative there will be an inverse relation between concentration and rate of reaction. Since PFR decreases the concentration gradually, at any instant or any location in the reactor, the concentration is always higher than that found in a CSTR. Therefore, a PFR is suitable for positive order reactions.
