Is going to an amplified rock concert really that bad for my ears? Let’s try to answer that numerically. Look up federal regulations “29 CFR 1910.95” (CFR stands for Code of Federal Regulations). You can find them online without much trouble.

a. How many hours per day can my boss expose me to 115 dB noise at my workplace? b.I measure the SIL ten feet away from a speaker at an outdoor rock concert and get a measurement of 128 dB (ear damaging levels!). How far away to I need to stand for the music to be a (much safer) 68 dB? Use the 1/r 2 dissipation law, but be sure to apply it to the energy, not to SIL! Obviously, I’m ignoring walls and such for this problem.
