What is an unrealized holding gain or loss? How is it different from an actual gain or loss?

Answer #1
Unrealized holding gain or loss is recognized on year/period end when we compare the Fair value of Investment with Cost of Investment which we are holding ( i.e. is still unsold ). If fair value is more than the cost , then there will be unrealized holding gain . On the another hand, if the Fair value is less than the cost, then there will be unrealized holding loss.
Actual gain or loss arises when we have sold the investment which we were holding earlier. If selling price is more than the cost of Investment then we will have actual gain. On the other hand if selling price is less than the cost investment then we will be having actual loss.
