The Mariana trench is located in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 11 000 m below the surface of the water.

The Mariana trench is located in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of about 11 000 m below the surface of the water. The density of seawater is 1025 kg/m^3.  If an underwater vehicle were to explore such a depth, what force would the water exert on the vehicle's observation window (radius = 0.254 m)? For comparison, determine the weight of a jetliner whose mass is 1.17 times 10^5 kg.

Answer #1

a)

P = *g*h

P = 1025 kg/m^2 x 9.81 m/s^2 x 11000 m

P = 1.1 x 10^8 pa

F = PA

F = (1.1 x 10^8 pa x pi x 0.254^2)

F = 2.2 x 10^7 N

b)

F' = mg

F' = (1.17 x 10^5 kg) x 9.81 m/s^2
