A recession is the contractionary phase the business cycle. A recession is said to be occurred when the GDP growth rate falls for two or more consecutive quarters. During this period aggregate demand falls short of aggregate supply which further leads to actual GDP to fall below the potential GDP. Many of the firms lay off workers because of the reduction in sales. This lay off of worker by the firms lead to huge unemployment. This type of unemployment is known as cyclical unemployment. In short cyclical unemployment occurs during recession.
