Answer #1

Esters can be hydrolyzed into their carboxylic acid and alcohol components under either acidic or basic conditions. The chemical reaction between ester and sodium hydroxide is a saponification reaction.

Saponification of methyl salicylate is a hydrolysis reaction. This reaction occurs in the presence of a base (instead of acid), the carboxylic acid, and phenolic -OH groups on salicylic acid are ionized. This compound exists as the sodium salt of salicylic acid sodium salicylate.

Saponification reaction is an exothermic reaction. So, the temperature of the reaction mixture to be during reflux increases.
