1- Name of the field- Neurosurgery.

2- Definition of the field- Surgery related to the nerves, the spinal cord and the brain. It is the surgery related to the nervous system.

3- Qualifications/ Experience/ Licensure- The prerequisite degree for becoming a neurosurgeon is M.D. (Doctor in Medicine) A one year internship and minimum six years neurosurgical residency is mandatory. Neurosurgical license and certification is a compulsion. Fellowship in a specific area is also preferred.

4- Tasks and responsibilities- There are specific tasks and responsibilities that are crucial in nature. Closely checking and examining the patients suffering from the problems/ disorders related to the nerves, spinal cord and the brain/ nervous system.

Prescribing medications, monitoring the treatment and further alter the doses if required. Prescribing the diagnostic tests. Verifying, evaluating and interpreting the reports and further treat the patients.

If the disorder is severe and cannot be cured by mere medication carrying out the surgery related to either brain, nerves or the spinal cord and through it, eliminate abnormalities and deformities.  

5- Work settings- The nature of work requires problem solving skills, command on the core aspects of neurosurgery ( Anatomy of brain and spinal cord) backed by empathy and patience.

There must be willingness to work even in the night shifts and preparedness for emergencies. The person must be well versed with computer and internet usage. There has to be an awareness regarding recent happenings and research in the given context.

6- Salary/ famous people in the field- Generally salary in the US is $ 250000 for neurosurgeons. It differs in the other nations. But still the difference is not a big one.

University of California, John Hopkins Hospital; Baltimore, Mayo Clinic; Rochester, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston are some of the best neuro surgical institutions.

Dr. Richard Anderson, Dr. Neil Feldstein, Dr. Donald Quest are the best neurosurgeons in the United States.
