The IR spectrum of a solid can be taken up by dissolving it to create a solution . An appropriate solvent is tetrachloromethane(CCl4) because it's IR stretches are only in the fingerprint region.

CCl4 is used as a solvent in IR spectroscopy since most of the solid compound soluble in this solvent and almost transparent in the important absorption region of the IR spectrum and only absorbs at around 800 cm-1.
