Will a solution of CH3NH3NO3 be acidic, basic or neutral? Explain and justify your answer clearly.
CH3NH3NO3 is a salt produced by the neutralization reaction between methyl amine CH3NH2 (a weak base) and nitric acid HNO3 (a strong acid):
CH3NH2 + HNO3 -> CH3NH3NO3
Salts produced from the reaction between a strong acid and a weak base are acidic salts. So the answer is that CH3NH3NO3 will have an acidic solution.
Remember these rules too (they may come in handy):
Strong acid + strong base = neutral salt
Strong acid + weak base = acidic salt
Weak acid + strong base = basic salt
Weak acid + weak base = depends on which is the stronger
