How do I figure out which one is the most significant resonance structure? What reasons why would that structure be the most significant?

Solution: in order to find most significant resonating structure we have to follow the following sequence of stability of resonating structure.

1) non- polar resonating structure.

2) more the number of pi bond more the significant.

3) charge location , negative charge should be on most electronegative atom present in structure.

4) charge separation, like charge should be at maximum distance and unlike must be closer.

Now based on these fundamental , structure (2) is most significant , there is negative charge on oxygen atom (highly electronegative).

Second structure is most stable theirfore most significant.
