1. Degree of unsaturation : replace O with an CH2, we get, C13H16. This is short of 12 H's from its saturated structure. The molecule thus has 6 degrees of unsaturation.

2. IR interpretation

peak around 1500-1600 cm-1 are due to aromatic C-C stretch

peak around 1760 cm-1 is due to C=O stretch

peaks around 2800 cm-1 are due to aliphatic C-H stretch

3. 1H-NMR interpretation

2.4 ppm (singet) for 3H due to CH3 next to an C=O

peaks between 7-8.4 pm are due to aromatic C-H protons
