Considering their functional differences, why do you think the walls of the arteriers are proportionally thicker than those of the corrsponding veins?

The blood is pumped directly into the arteries from the heart, therefore the arteries need to have thicker waller inorder to withstand the high pressure. The heart pumps blood at high pressure so that the oxygenated blood can reach all the parts of the body quickly.

The veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart under low pressure. Therefore they have thinner walls.
