would there be any difference or correlation if instead of sodium methoxide we use t-Buoxide for dehydrohalogenation of 2-bromoheptane? what shall be the products (major & minor) formed?

Answer :

Major and minor products are opposite when instead of sodium methoxide , sodium tert-butoxide is taken .

This is because sodium tert-butoxide is a strong bulky base , which abstract H+ from the least substituted side and give rise to 1-heptene as a major product . Alkene formed is less stable so reaction using sodium tert-butoxide is kinetic controlled reaction.

While in case of sodium methoxide , it is a strong (but less than tert-butoxide) and non-bulky base . So, it will take H+ in such a way which leads to formation of more stable product (2-heptene) . So, it is a thermodynamic controlled reaction.

2-heptene is stable than 1-heptene because of zeitsev rule . More substituted alkene is more stable than less substituted alkene because of more number of hyperconjugation.
