We know there is a man in the middle vulnerability with unauthenticated DH key establishment. And the way to negate that is to use authenticate the keys used. But what if I only verify the signature of one end. Is there any vulnerability then?

Should We Use a Wholesaler? A common cliché is ‘let’s cut out the middle man’. Removing the middle-man (a wholesaler) from the channel will provide a higher per unit margin for a manufacturer, but will it result in a higher profit overall? For this activity, help the following manufacturer decide whether or not they should use a wholesaler? ACTIVITY/TASK Olive’s Olives is a producer of olives in a number of different varieties. Their factory is located in Sydney and their...

    a) b) A man is out fishing with his daughter. They are initially sitting at opposite ends of their 3.00-m canoe, which has a mass of 60.0 kg and is at rest in the middle of a calm lake. The man and the daughter then carefully trade places. We will neglect any resistive forces between the canoe and the water. Note that you will most likely get different numbers for the different parts below. As usual, a good way to...

Digital Signature (5-5): In the course notes we looked at RSA for encryption and signatures (using exactly the same mathematical formula), and ElGamal for encryption. There has been several questions on using ElGamal for signature. The ElGamal encryption algorithm cannot be used for signatures but there are signature schemes that is based on discrete logarithm. (a) Search for simple explanation of the ElGamal signature scheme and DSA signature scheme (Hint: Wikipedia). Can these algorithms be used to encrypt a message?...

The Diffie-Hellman public-key encryption algorithm is an alternative key exchange algorithm that is used by protocols such as IPSec for communicating parties to agree on a shared key. The DH algorithm makes use of a large prime number p and another large number, g that is less than p. Both p and g are made public (so that an attacker would know them). In DH, Alice and Bob each independently choose secret keys, ?? and ??, respectively. Alice then computes...

Scenario We need to write a method that, given a key as an argument, returns the next in order key found in the binary search tree. If the key given as an argument is not found, the method should still return the next in order key. If the binary tree is empty or all the stored keys are smaller than the argument, then the return value should be empty. For example, using a collection of {10,13,52,67,68,83} stored in the binary...

Decrypting the APCO cipher without the key. Decryption without the key is obviously a much more difficult process. Indeed, the purpose of encryption is to make it as difficult as possible for anyone who does not know the key to read the plain text. We will be using an unsophisticated password cracking technique called a brute force attack. A brute force attack on the APCO cipher works by trying every possible four digit key (from 0000 to 9999) and keeping...

Homework problem 50 involves both regression and correlation so we refer to the key elements in both section 10-1 and 10-2. I used a spreadsheet that I developed for another problem with the data provided to find the regression line for predicting the depth of an earthquake from its magnitude. I have attached my spreadsheet. The plot shows a lot of scatter in the data and the calculated linear correlation coefficient r is low: -0.047. We are asked to estimate...
