Before , going to calculate oxidation number we should know some important point

* All diatomic molecule has 0 oxidation state.

* O has -2 oxidation state , while H+ has +1 oxidation state.

*In case of single ion, the oxidation number is equal to the charge at that ion , for e.g. in Mn2+ , oxidation number=2

* In case of a molecule, consider the oxidation number of atom which to be calculated is x ,and then add or subtract the oxidation number of ligand associated to that molecule and do equal to the charge on whole molecule (in case no charge , write 0 ) ,and then calculate.for e.g.

MnO2 = x-2(2) =0

x=+4.

Thus , oxidation number of Mn = +4.
