pre - lab questions saponification
1. What happens to the structure of a soap micelle if placed in a non-polar solvent?
2. sodium methylsulfonate (CH3OSO2-Na +) is an inefficient detergent. Explain why
3. what is the reason for the presence of crusts that accumulate in the bathtubs
4. i put my results and observations in the table. the soap and
detergent used had CaCl2 but as you can see results and
observations were similiar is it becuse of the compound?
Solution :
1) A soap micelle is formed in such a fashion in which the interior portion of the cluster is formed by the hydrophobic end and the ionic ends are on the outer surface. If the soap micelles are dissolved in non-polar solvent, then the reverse of micelle will formed, wherein the ionic end forms the interior and the hydrocarbon end becomes exterior.
2) The detergent sodium methylsulfonate (CH3OSO2-Na +) is inefficient because it has small alkyl group, hence unable to form effective micelles.
