Anyone know how to identify this compound?
From the IR absorption data, the stretching value at around 1715 cm-1indicates that the unknown molecule must contains an ketone(-CO-) functionality. That means the unknown molecule is an ketone. Again the stretching value at around 2973 cm-1 and 2940 cm-1 for primary sp3 C-H and the stretching and around 2840 cm-1 for tertiary sp3C-H stretching. Absorption peak around 1450 cm-1 for C-H bending vibration. All these data suggest for the structure of unknown molecule is 3-methyl-2-butanone.
(CH3)CH-CO-CH3
