Could anyone help me number the carbons in this molecule based off the IUPAC name? I'm normally very good at this but I'm getting really confused.

Answer : No. of carbons in the structure are 17.

Explanation:

In the IUPAC name following confusions might be occur -

1. Octane contains 8 membered bicyclo ring out of which one member is 'N' : Nitrogen thus, it contains 7 carbon atoms.

2. Carboxylate is COO-. Containing 1 carbon atom.

3. Methyl given in the start of the IUPAC name is methyl which is attached to the carboxylate group.
