Question

Consider a WT12x51.5 A992 section subjected to shear forces Centroid (i) With the thin-wall assumption the T section consists of the two lines passing through the center lines of the web and flange as shown. Using this two line model compute centroid and x and y moments of inertias. Note that these values will be slightly different than those given in the AISC tables for this section. The tabulated values are more accurate and should be used for design. However for the shear flow calculations the section is treated as thin- walled section. The results will be inconsistent if we used the tabulated values. Answers:Jr 2.504 in, h = 205.9 in, and = 59.54 in (i) Compute shear flows in the section when it is subjected to a vertical shear force of V,-100 kip. Use the section properties computed in (i) V-100 kip Answers (x, y) from the centroid Shear flow in flange on the positive x side: qx)-5.363 1.192x Shear flow in the stem: q)23.81 0.275y2 (ii) Using the shear flows from (ii) determine shear stresses in the section
