Suspended Solids v/s Dissolved Solids Total solids is a combination of dissolved solids and suspended solids which are obtained by separating the liquid and solid phase by the method of evaporation. Total Suspended solids are a combination of settleable and non-settleable solids. This is determined by filtering a wastewater sample through a membrane filter or through a glass fiber filter contained in a Gooch crucible. During normal detention period settleable solids settle in sedimentation tanks. This fraction is determined after 1hour of settling by measuring the volume of sludge in the bottom of an Imhoff cone. Total dissolved solids can be defined as the measure of the combined content of all organic and inorganic substances that are present in a liquid in micro-granular, molecular or ionized suspended form. It is a measure of the solids remaining in a water sample after filtering through a 1.2 um filter. Normally water can be classified by the level of TDS in the water. The classification based on TDS is as follows: 1. Fresh water: less than 500 mg/L, that is, TDS-500 ppm 2. Brackish water: 500 to 30,000 mg/L, that is, TDS 500-30 000 ppm 3. Saline water: 30,000 to 40,000 mg/L, that is, TDS-30 000-40 000 ppm 4. Hypersaline: greater than 40,000 mg/L that is, TDS>=40 000 ppm

Measurement Total Dissolved solids The method used for the measurement of total dissolved solids are Gravity analysis and Conductivity method Gravity analysis method is preferred over the conductivity method as it is more accurate. Total Suspended solids Turbidity in water is main caused by Total suspended solids (TSS). The suspended solids is measured by weight. It is the most common, and accurate method of measuring but it is difficult and time consuming. To measure TSS, a water sam- ple is first filtered, then dried, and at last it is weighed.
