QUESTION 1 a) Figure Q1 (a) (i) shows two samples of short concrete column having a diameter of 60 mm and a length of 1500 mm. Both specimens are made of lightweight anid normal weight concrete. Compression test is carried out to justify the change of shapes for both columns. The compression stress-strain diagrams for the two materials are shown in Figure Q1 (a) (ii). i) With the aid of sketches and formulas, briefly explain Poissons ratio, v in 4 marka) mechanic of materials. (CO2-PO2)C1) i) Assuming these materials behave elastically and make use fthe compression stress-strain diagram (Figure Q1 (b)), compare the changes in lengths and diameters for both columns after applying the load. Assume the Poissons ratio, V, for both materials is 0.30. (CO2-PO2(C2) (10 marks) 200 KN 200 kN 200 kN 200 kN Lightweight concrete Normal weight concrete Figure Q1 (a) (0)
