the mean and median can be used in a variety of situations. There are times though when the use of the median is preferable to the use of the mean. In what types of situations is the median more appropriate to use than the mean? Please provide an example with your response.
Solution:
mean: mean is the average of all the observation and formula for mean is = (sum of all observation) / (total number of observation)
example :1) If we have to find the average performance of a whole class then we use mean.
2) if have to find the average number of people who belong in economical backward class
median : median is the mid observation from the whole data if whole data is arranged in increasing or decreasing order.
median = (n/2)th observation where n = total number of observation
we use median rather then mean when there are large number of outliers
example :
if we recording the 2 observations of income in $ of employ from USA and 8 observation of income in $ of employ from Africa then we can not use mean because in USA income is very high but Africa temp is very low so we take median of all the observation.

Descriptive statistics like mean, median, range, and standard deviation can be used to summarize data. But the value isn't in knowing how to calculate these numbers, it's in knowing what they mean—or even which ones to consider. This discussion explores that by asking you to take a strictly hypothetical look at a serious circumstance. An article you might want to consider in this context is Stephan Jay Gould’s The Median Isn’t the Message. 1. If you were diagnosed with a...
52.1 Three primary statistics are used to describe a variable's central tendency, defined as the average behavior of the variable. You can use these statistics, known as the mean, the median, and the mode, to draw meaningful conclusions about a variable's past behavior and to predict its future behaviar An investor is considering a stock with the following returns over the past 12 years: Year Annual Return Year Annual Return 12 10 12 The mean, also known as the arithmetic...
