the mean and median can be used in a variety of situations. There are times though when the use of the median is preferable to the use of the mean. In what types of situations is the median more appropriate to use than the mean? Please provide an example with your response.

Solution:

mean: mean is the average of all the observation and formula for mean is = (sum of all observation) / (total number of observation)

example :1) If we have to find the average performance of a whole class then we use mean.

2) if have to find the average number of people who belong in economical backward class

median : median is the mid observation from the whole data if whole data is arranged in increasing or decreasing order.

median = (n/2)th observation where n = total number of observation

we use median rather then mean when there are large number of outliers

example :

if we recording the 2 observations of income in $ of employ from USA and 8 observation of income in $ of employ from Africa then we can not use mean because in USA income is very high but Africa temp is very low so we take median of all the observation.
