Answer #1

1. Zero reading = 0.005mm

It is 1/200=0.005 and the units are mm since it is a micrometer.

2.Reading of sleeve=5mm

Reading of sleeve is the value before the 0 in the circular scale.

3.Reading of Thimble= 14mm

Reading of thimble is the reading on the screw rotated.

4. Total reading of the micrometer= 5+14*0.01=5.14mm

Total reading is calculated by Main scale reading + Circular scale reading *least count

5. Actual diametre of the ball = 14mm

A washer you needed as a fastener broke and now you need to buy a new one. You used a micrometer screw to measure its dimensions. This screw has a least count of 0.01 mm and you assumed a zero zero reading. (a) For the outside diameter, the sleeve reading was 20 mm and the thimble reading was 36. What is the final reading? (b) For the inside diameter, the sleeve reading was 12 mm and the thimble reading was...

    8. (10 points extra credit) Consider the figure shown below. It shows a U-shaped mercury manometer (a device for detecting pressure differences) that is attached to a pipe along which water is flowing from left to right. The water pipe has a circular cross-section. At A the diameter of the water pipe is 5.6 cm and the speed of the water is 2.80 m/s. At B the diameter of the pipe is 3 cm. The fluid in the manometer is...
