In maximum cases, you really can't unless the omitted variable is completely deterministic.
If you have enough ''relevant'' information (which is dependent on problem), you may be able to account for the missing variable, but often not very well, not the way you might with panel data. There isn't really an suitable analogous method that fits.
But, as with everything, it depends on the problem and the data.
