What is the formula to calculate the gain or loss on a specific investment (hint, review Form 8949 or Schedule D or Form 4797 and instructions)

The gain or loss on an Investment is calculated by using the following formula:

                         Sale price - Purchase price

If the amount is negative, resulting from the being market value lower than the book value, you have lost on your investment.

If the amount is positive, resulting from market value being greater than book value, you have gained on your investment.

If you want to calculate the percentage of gain or loss the formula is:

                   Sale price - Purchase price      

                  Purchase price of Investment

Finally, multiply your answer with 100 to get the percentage.
